28 Gates Exclusive Fly Fishing Experience

October 19, 2022
Located one hour from Hobart, 28 Gates is home to large trout and exclusive Tasmanian fly fishing experiences.

28 Gates is a luxury farm stay accommodation that also offers a number of activities on the property including feeding the placid farm animals, walks in the wilderness, native wildlife night tours, photography tuition, enjoying local food and wine and of course, fly fishing for trout!

We began fly fishing at 28 Gates over two years ago when we found a growing demand from our clients for fly fishing options outside of the main trout fishing season. Being a private fishery, no angling license is needed and it is open year round for fly fishing. It is great for fly fishers of all experience levels.

Located only one hour from Hobart, situated in the Derwent Valley, it often enjoys more favourable weather conditions than many of the Highland Lakes we regularly visit over the summer months.

Highlights of fishing at 28 Gates Farmstay include:

  • easy shore access
  • great sight fishing
  • close location to Hobart

The fly fishing experience itself at 28 Gates is spectacular - being a private fishery it is totally exclusive, as only one group is allowed access to the lakes each day. This along with brown, rainbow, tiger and brook trout averaging 4 pounds and often encountered up to 10 pounds, it makes for some very memorable fly fishing experiences.

A visit to 28 Gates is well worth the short drive from Hobart, or we can build a visit into our trout fly fishing multi-day charters and packages as well.
