Accommodation Options For Your Trout Fishing Trip in Tasmania

July 1, 2025

If you're planning a trip to Tasmania, we've compiled a list of some of the best trout fishing accommodation options to help you plan for your adventure.

When you visit guided fly fishing tour of Tasmania, where you stay can make a big difference to your experience.

Undoubtedly, Tasmania's Central Highlands is home to some of the best trout fishing waters in the state - including expansive and popular lakes combined with picturesque flowing rivers.

Staying nearby to these popular areas means less travel, more time fishing, and better access to early and late sessions.

Over the years, we’ve spent a lot of time in the Highlands and as such, wanted to share some of go-to accommodation both nearby, and in the greater Hobart area, that aim to make your experience the best it can be.

Let's dive in...

Some of the best trout fishing accommodation in Tasmania's central highlands are:

Great Lake Hotel (Miena)

The Great Lake Hotel is a favourite for many anglers, and it's no surprises as to why.

The Hotel is located right in the middle of Miena and close to popular Tasmanian fishing locations in Great Lake, Penstock Lagoon, and Little Pine.

“The Great Lake Hotel is more than just a place to sleep," shares Trout Tales owner Matt.

"It’s a great place where you can catch up with other anglers and locals, grab a good meal, and refresh before heading back out the next day for some more fishing action.”

The rooms are comfortable and well suited to fishing trips. There is a drying area for gear, a cosy bar, and hot meals to wrap up the day.

Great Lake Hotel is a great choice if you want to be right in the centre of the Highlands fishing scene.

Central Highlands Lodge (Miena)

For something a little quieter, Central Highlands Lodge is ideal.

It sits on the shores of Great Lake at Miena and offers lodge rooms and private cabins.

“It’s peaceful and feels a bit more remote,” Matt says. “But you still get everything you need warm rooms, good food, and great views.”

The lodge is also great base for exploring Woods Lake, Arthurs Lake, and other nearby waters.

After fishing, relax by the fire or chat with other anglers in the main dining room.

Other Central Highlands accomodation options

Ratho Farm, located at Bothwell, is another great option nearby to the Central Highlands.

It’s more of an 'experience-based' accomodation, with a strong connection to the local history of the area.

It’s a great place to relax between sessions and take in the heritage and hospitality on offer.

Accommodation options near Hobart for your fly fishing trip

Whether you're looking for a convenient stay before setting off on a multi day fly fishing tour, or staying in Hobart and looking at doing a single day fly fishing trip, there are some great options in Hobart, including:

Macq01 and the Tasman offer a premium accommodation experience for anglers who are looking to base themselves in Hobart, often at the start and end of their fishing trips.

The Vibe is also a great option for those looking for accommodation options within the heart of Hobart - and if you're looking to plan a wider itinerary beyond fishing, you can check out our dedicated blog on things to do when visiting Tasmania.

Each of these offers comfort, convenience, and easy access for pick-up and drop-off before heading out for the tour.

Accommodation options near Launceston for your fly fishing trip

The northern midlands area provides some fantastic river fishing throughout the season.

There are some exceptional accommodation options close by.

  • Woolmers Estate
  • Brickendon Estate

Staying on one of these historic properties really adds another experience to your trip, where you can also easily explore Tasmania's north and north-west or north-east regions.

How to choose where to stay

Ultimately, your fishing and wider goals are a great place to start when choosing your trout fishing accommodation options in Tasmania.

Staying close to the lakes of the Central Highlands lets you not only fish the best times of day, but also respond to changing conditions - plus you can easily duck away for a bit of respite too if needed..

“When you’re five minutes from the water, you can make the most of every window,” says Matt, "so for example, you can rest during the midday period and head back out when the light or weather conditions are more suited."

Cost is also a consideration when booking, especially the Hobart and Launceston accommodation options and choosing a place that both meets your needs, but also your budget.

We encourage visitors to explore what's on offer including hotels, AirBNB and other avenues to ensure they get the most from their trip.

Book your guided trip
